The Studios at Hotel Berry
TOD Hotel Rehab Revitalizes Sacramento Neighborhood
Permanent supportive housing studios for formerly homeless
Located in downtown Sacramento just blocks from the State Capitol, The Studios at Hotel Berry is a historic, mixed-use renovation and total modernization of the 1920s vintage Hotel Berry that is now affordable studios for individuals and those with special needs. Despite repeated and failed attempts by other developers, Jamboree partnered with the City of Sacramento and its Redevelopment and Housing Agency to bring the structure up to code – including a seismic retrofit – and update what had become a blighted eyesore in deplorable condition. The renovation included a retention of all historic marquees, signage and roof details on a historically significant building. Jamboree also added kitchenettes and bathrooms in each studio and installed water-saving features throughout.
The restoration of what was once one of Sacramento’s finer hotels served as a catalyst to help revitalize downtown. The complete restoration of this important Downtown landmark to its former historic character fulfills the City of Sacramento’s Single Resident Occupancy Ordinance (SRO) to preserve 712 SRO hotel rooms in Downtown.
Thanks to Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) vouchers awarded by the city in early 2017, 25 studios are designated for veterans. Ten of the residents at The Studios at Hotel Berry receive onsite supportive services through funding provided under the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA). A full-time, onsite resident services coordinator from Jamboree’s partner, Transitional Living and Community Support, assists these residents living with mental illness who are formerly homeless through 24/7 availability for support of daily living activities and links them to other supportive and independent living services. All residents benefit from onsite programs that focus on job skills, health and wellness and community building provided by Jamboree’s Resident Services Group.
Jamboree worked hard to make the dream of renovating this historic property a reality and will continue to collaborate closely with the City of Sacramento and other partners to keep this innovative, award-winning property affordable for the long-term.
